“One of the challenging tree planting I experienced!” shared by Bogs Balangat. It was a rainy morning in the mountains of Sierra Madre when we had to walk and climb up where the tree planting site was situated.
Led by Fostering Education and Environment for Development (FEED Inc.), there were about 60 volunteers (students, professionals) who hiked together with us uphill and plant indigenous trees in the sloping side of the land. The area was slippery because of the pouring rain and controlling not to slide and bathe in mud were the challenges.
The 25 November 2017 tree planting in UPLB’s Laguna-Quezon Land Grant (LQLG) was definitely a tough one. But what made that activity amazing were the strong and happy volunteers who were not discouraged to be soaked in the rain and be covered all over with stain.
The LQLG is a 6,765-hectare property that straddles Siniloan, Laguna and Real, Quezon. It was acquired by UP on Feb. 8, 1930 by virtue of Republic Act 3608 – “An act endowing the University of the Philippines with portions of the public domain for additional support and maintenance, and for other purposes.” (www.uplb.edu.ph)
Everyone went back to the cottage soaking, dirty, hungry yet with a happy soul. Each one planted more than one seedling and everyone contributed to making our nature healthier and greener. We hope that after a few months, those seedlings will grow tall – as tall as our dreams for Mother Nature.
